Groningen: The Capital of the North of Netherlands
Groningen is the largest city as well as the
economic and cultural centre of the northern
part of the Netherlands. With almost
250,000 inhabitants, it is the second-largest
municipality outside the Randstad, the
conurbation of cities in the western part of
the country. It is well-connected to the rest
of the country, including the national airport
Schiphol (AMS).
University of Groningen: Second-oldest University of the Netherlands
In the 13th century, Groningen became an important trade centre. Already in 1614, The council of the province of Groningen, and the Ommelanden, as the current province of Groningen was then known, founded the university. This makes the University of Groningen the second-oldest university of the Netherlands.
The university was home to several well-known scientists. At the university, four Nobel laureates had worked, studied, or served as professors. A former professor of particular relevance for different research areas present at Euro-Par is the mathematician Johan Bernoulli. His son Daniel Bernoulli, who also became a well-known mathematician and physicist, was born in Groningen.
